It all started with a, "You guys up from Parker." I'm not sure if it was a question or a statement. While having issues with the use of the word up (because I felt we were down from Parker) I wondered how does someone know anything about where we're up or down from. Mind you this is taking place as I was washing my hands in front of a line of Port-a-Potties on the Riverwalk in Pueblo at the Boats, Blues, and BarBQue competition. I'm still looking for a paper towel to dry my hands when my wife answers yes and the lady says that they sold us donuts at the Parker Farmer's Market. Without thinking I hear myself say, "Hey it's the donut lady!" "It's the donut man!" And I'm making sure that my son knows who and what I'm talking about because he's eaten more than a few of those donuts. In fact he is a really good kid that will share almost anything he has, but once you hand him a bag of those donuts you are on your own. If you ask him for one he'll just give you that look like you should have gotten your own bag, these are my donuts. Once the rush of Lil' Orbits memories had past we learned that the "donut people" shared our love of BBQ. In fact they were in Pueblo taking the KCBS Certified BBQ Judging Class and were there that day, as I was, to judge. As we spoke more I learned of the "donut man's" desire to compete as a cooker and had even found a non-sanctioned event to try out his stuff. He just needed some help. "I can help," I thought. But I was cautious and said I would think about it and email him later in the week. So I did, and I did, and we decided to do a trial run that next weekend at his house. My wife and I loaded up some chicken, some ribs and some rub and headed to the "donut man's" house. What we learned that afternoon is that the "donut man" is in fact a very experienced smoker that really knows how to tend a fire. Not only that but he has developed a rub that bested all the others we tried that day. So as they say, the rest is history. We are now the Smokin' Hawgs and BBQ is our game. Win or loose we plan on having lots of fun and great BBQ. Because let's face it, if nobody else likes our stuff, oh well, more for us to eat!!! |
